Get a quote USAA is available only to active military members, veterans and their families.

If you’re an active member of the military or a veteran — or have an immediate family member who is — chances are good you’ll get a cheaper-than-average rate with USAA, an option that isn’t available to the general public. USAA is the cheapest auto insurance option for every driver type below, in many cases by a large amount. USAA customers also benefit from the insurer’s top-rated customer service.

Cheapest for good drivers

For drivers with no at-fault accidents, DUIs or moving violations.

USAA is the cheapest overall option, at $93 per month, but those without a military connection (and thus ineligible for USAA) should consider Nationwide. The company offers policy features like vanishing deductible, and discounts may help lower monthly costs.

Cheapest for young drivers

For drivers in their early 20s.

Young Delaware drivers who aren’t military affiiliated will generally find the cheapest rates going with Geico. For those who make good grades, the price could be even lower. Geico costs new drivers substantially more per month, and has lower ratings for customer service.

Cheapest for high-mileage drivers

For drivers who travel more than 40 miles a day.

Delaware drivers with long commutes generally won’t pay a large insurance penalty. Still, Nationwide provides policy options that could be helpful to long-distance drivers, including roadside assistance services and rental reimbursement.

Cheapest for drivers with imperfect records

For drivers who have had at-fault accidents, DUIs or moving violations.

Those without spotless driving records will have to pay more for coverage, but fortunately, both USAA (for military families) and Nationwide offer accident forgiveness policies, so if you’re already covered, your rate won’t go up after an accident.

Minimum car insurance requirements in Delaware

The minimum required liability limits are:

  • $15, 000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $30, 000 bodily injury liability per crash
  • $10, 000 property damage liability per crash

Even though these limits will be enough to drive legally, they may not fully cover others’ damages if you’re liable for a crash. If the cost of injury treatment or vehicle repairs exceeds your coverage amount, the remainder would come out of your own savings.
